Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Woodworking Co., Ltd. built its own workshop in 2009 and has been operating since 2010. I have continued to participate in the Woodworkers Week Nagoya. About Woodworkers Week Nagoya: This is an event to think together with woodworkers about how to live a rich life that begins with woodworking. Since 2008, many woodworkers from all over the country have gathered in Nagoya every year in early summer to hold exhibitions of their works, forums (lectures, study sessions), workshops, etc. https://www.woodworkers.jp/ "Wooden furniture exhibition by 40 people," "Chair exhibition," "Solo exhibition," "Workshop," "Lectures, etc." The target audience is the general public, those involved in design and planning, The visitors were a wide range of people, including students aspiring to become woodworkers and people involved in woodworking. For those who want to see furniture made by studio artists and those who like wooden furniture You can see the works of woodworkers from all over the country in one place. It is the largest event in the country. Interacting with clients I met at Woodworkers Week, Meeting with great woodworking seniors, woodworking friends, Lumber stores, paint stores, cutlery stores, and woodworking education stores. What has brought me here today is the daily routine of steadily creating art in Kyoto, Learning through interaction at the annual Woodworkers' Week Nagoya I feel that this repetition was important. The "Wooden Furniture by 40 People" exhibition is not the type of exhibition where you see immediate sales like a craft fair, but rather we have been involved in it as a long-term exhibition where people can get to know the existence of the exhibits over a period of several years. This year marks the 15th anniversary of Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Woodworking. My long-awaited solo exhibition in Nagoya is scheduled to be held at the Tsutsugikan. The Cultural Path Shumokukan is A project within "Woodworkers Week Nagoya" called "Chair Group Exhibition at the Tsukigikan" and It has become the venue for events such as the "Chair Exhibition Review by Professor Shimazaki Makoto." Mr. Sakakibara has been a driving force behind the chair exhibition for a long time. Due to various circumstances, the chair exhibition will continue to be held at the Nagoya Denki Bunka Kaikan venue as part of the "40-person Wooden Furniture Exhibition." In order to cherish the relationship he has built with Woodworkers' Week and the Tsuchigi Museum, he contacted Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Woodworks, who had said they "wanted to hold a solo exhibition at Woodworkers' Week someday." A past photo of the Woodworkers' Week event at the Cultural Path Shumokukan. -------Looking back on my involvement with "Woodworkers Week Nagoya"-------- "Woodworkers Week Nagoya" has been held since 2008. Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Woodworks started building their own workshop and home in April 2009 and completed construction in November. We filed our business registration in January 2010 and started our business. So, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who started Woodworkers Week. While aiming for the same direction, they worked out subtle differences and moved the event forward. With these thoughts in mind, this year, 2025, marks my 16th year of involvement. ●First time participating in Woodworkers Week Nagoya 2010 in 2010 2010/5/14-16 "Woodworkers Week 2010 in Nagoya" "Woodworkers Chairs Collection" Exhibition of 100 chairs by 57 artists. Organized by Mr. Sakakibara of the Woodworkers Week Executive Committee at the 1st floor of Mitsukoshi Isetan Department Store Lachic, 3-6-1 Sakae, Naka-ku, Nagoya. Four chairs were exhibited. At that time, I met someone who happened to be passing by, liked the chairs, and spoke to me, and that encounter is still continuing 15 years later. ●2011. First time exhibiting at the "Wooden Furniture 40 People Exhibition" (second year participating in the week) "After my child was born, I was getting a lot of orders for large boxes, and it was around this time that Nagoya Woodworkers Week came around. Toru stood alone in a booth that had narrowed down the categories and only displayed chair-related items. I decided that next year I would create two booths and a new large box. "Since April, I have been taking my children to and from nursery school, and I thought that work in the workshop would pick up speed. At first, things didn't go as planned, with children getting fevers and having to go and pick them up, or adults catching colds and being bedridden. The deadline was fast approaching. We managed to complete and bring in our new works, a large-frame cabinet in walnut and a large-frame chest in cherry, and it was an emotional first exhibition for the two booths. On Sunday, June 3rd, we will be holding the "Woodworkers Week Nagoya 2012" event. By Masaharu Izaki, Shinichiro Tani, and Hideaki Nishikawa I attended a gallery talk entitled "Talking about People and Work" in memory of Murakami Tomiro. ●Exhibited at the 2013 "Wooden Furniture 40 People Exhibition" (this is my fourth year participating in the week) . However, in July 2020, Shinichiro Tani and others started a woodworkers forum called "Woodworkers Week: Let's learn about woodworking online" https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgMbwGL2hdaEa_63A-MrvkQ So that videos can . • CONFORT No.202 (April 2025 issue) Earth Plastering and Tile – 2025/3/5 [Magazine] Saito arato Plasterer ITAYAKOBO Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Woodworks

Released on March 5, 2025 Comfort CONFORT No.202 (April 2025 issue) [Magazine] Soil Plastering and Tile In an article interview with Saito Sakan, Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Woodworks was also interviewed and featured. Among the many places that Saito Sakan has worked on, It was an honor to be interviewed. ( Below is a blog post about how we decided on our location after visiting other places that Saito Sakan has worked on, such as the Essential Store and Farmoon, which feature beautiful clay walls.) There were many things I learned and realised while being interviewed and photographed. Conforto, which was first published in 1990 and has been in publication for 35 years, is a magazine I have admired since my student days. Thank you, Saito Arata-san and Misako-san. Edited and interviewed by: Kimie Tada Interviewed and written by: Rie Sasada Photo shoot photographer: Yohei Sasakura Publisher: Architectural Materials Research Company Release date: ‎ March 5, 2025 ‎ 144 pages CONFORT Home Page Amazon purchase page ( CONFORT No. 202 (April 2025 issue) [Magazine] Soil Plastering and Tile ) About CONFORT: CONFORT is supported by professionals who value the origins of design, which is to "pursue essential comfort." CONFORT means "comfortable" in Spanish. Light, air, volume of space, traffic flow, sound, relationship with the surrounding environment, floors, walls, ceilings, furniture, each design and texture of materials. From an interior design perspective, we delve into each of these aspects to determine how the people who are there will feel comfortable. And by carefully conveying the background and stories of each event, we hope to enrich the world of Japanese interior design in a fundamental sense. (From the CONFORT website ) (Below is a blog about the clay wall.) ● We created an atelier (1st floor studio, 2nd floor gallery) next to the Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Woodworks studio. The distinctive space of plastering. "Scrape off," "Press," "Polish" and the ceiling is "Nademono"(= Something that was stroked) You can see more photos of the studio being built (slideshow of the work in progress). In the fall of 2023, with the help of local friends, we will complete our second half-self-build. ( About the first self-build ) It took a year to complete the project, which progressed in parallel with regular furniture production. The fittings, the extra-large staircase chest of drawers and flooring were made from solid wood such as chestnut, keyaki, yew and maple. in particular, Itaya Kobo was responsible for the construction of the building, including the raising of the roof, installation of the structural plywood, and the underside of the eaves. The rest of the work was carried out by Asakura Mokko. Before installing the exterior walls, we first made and installed window frames out of yew wood. After that, we made a small eaves out of metal and installed them, then climbed up onto the scaffolding to work on the moisture-permeable waterproof sheet and waterproof tape. After that, we installed the ventilation furring strips and the lath with the moisture-permeable sheet (a surface that traps soil, like a wire mesh net). Construction. This time we fell in love with the plastered wall and asked Saito Plasterer to do the work. (Strictly speaking, Saito's sword is Y, with no lower dot.) saito arato (@saito_arato) • Instagram photos and videos The earthen walls and floors created by Shinjin Saito ( Team Saito) are mysterious and impressive, enveloping the space with a variety of textures, including scrapings, trowel presses, and agate polishing. Specifically, the troweling work was left to the plastering team, and the Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Woodworking team was The window frames are covered with masking tape, and the plastering team applies a primer, then the tape is removed. I put masking tape on the wall again for the top coat, knead the soil for the exterior walls (my role is called "kneading"), and when the pump that carries the soil to the place where it will be used is not working properly, I carry it in a bucket. Soil is heavy, and it's a tough race against time, especially in places where the sun is shining! Once the plastering team has applied the top coat, the work is gradually scraped off using several different types of brushes, starting with a coarse one. I also learned how to hold it tightly and polish it with agate. It was a great experience. Although plastering is an amateur, there are many similarities between plastering and woodworking in terms of "creating a flat surface," and the plastering team praised us for this. The woodworking team (Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Woodworking Team) was exhausted from working with earth, which they were not used to. The first floor is a workshop, where we will also be taking on the challenge of creating architectural fixtures such as kitchens. The showroom on the second floor is a space where the earthen walls, plastered floors, chestnut Korean flooring, and wooden furniture resonate with the greenery and light of the charcoal mountains. Before deciding on plastering, I went to see a store displaying plasterwork created by Saito Plasterer. 1. Osaka's " essential store " I went to see it and said, "It was absolutely amazing." So, at that time, we were wondering what to do with the interior and exterior walls of Asakura Mokko, whether to use earthen walls or not, and with the background of the rising cost of construction due to the Wood Shock, we were undecided and came to take a look. When I told him through the plasterer Saito later, The store owner, Takuya Tagami, said, "I wish they would at least do the interior walls." That's right, I thought, maybe at least the interior walls... Once I started thinking about this, gradually a feasible path began to open up. We decided to create an air space under the exterior wall, which meant more work, but it was a good decision. After that, when the mud wall that we had been unsure about was completed, he came to see it at the Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Woodworks workshop and we all ate meat buns together. It was a very moving experience. https://www.instagram.com/essential_store/ 2. Farmoon, a cafe in Ginkakuji, Kyoto Farmoon (@farmoon_kyoto) • Instagram photos and videos All the plastering on the walls, floors, counters, etc. was done by them. The fit and texture were wonderful. I made up my mind. (The handmade mooncakes on the cafe menu were incredibly delicious. There are only a few round tables and a counter, so I was able to get a seat when I went at opening time. When I went on another day, I was able to see the gallery space on the second floor while I waited.) 3. "Honke Owariya Confectionery Shop" in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kurumamachi-dori Nijo-shita Honke Owariya ( honke-owariya.co.jp ) The sweets section of a soba noodle shop where there are long queues. The walls, floors, counters, etc. were all plastered, and even the outside of the store had beautiful details. It was also helpful to hear about the actual usability of the counter. ④Kyoto "capo capo Kyoto Imperial Palace West Store" A confectionery workshop with a small cafe Kyoto Imperial Palace West Store | Store Introduction | bio sweet's capocapo | capo capo 〒602-8021 Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, Kamigyo Ward, Horimatsucho 419 This space was also very helpful in considering the direction of light, color, and texture. ⑤VAGUE KOBE Studio and Gallery VAGUE KOBE (@vague_kobe) • Instagram photos and videos A large, large-scale space. The artwork stands out against the earthen walls with their genuine texture. (There are other Saito Plastering sites, but these were the ones I was able to see before deciding on construction.) ------------------------------------------------------ After seeing these spaces, What color and finish should we use for the exterior walls of this Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Woodworking Company? What colour and finish should the interior walls be? What about the toilet? The lighting, size, and environment are all different. Saito Arata-san, about 10 years ago, When the Sumiyama area was in trouble due to landslides caused by torrential rains, Because I live nearby, He once came to the area as a volunteer and helped clear away mud and debris. Someone who knows what the light, wind, and air of the coal mines are like, All the veteran plasterers from Team Saito shared their opinions, They helped me with color and texture consultations. A pleasant looking building has been built that suits the local scenery. It must have been difficult to design the house because the client had a lot of say in it. Without a single frown Mr. Mitsuhiro Ishinomaki of ITAYA KOBO He listened to my advice on various things and put it all together for me. Kyoto Custom-built homes Natural materials Wooden homes Stylish | Itaya Kobo @ Custom-built homes in Uji, Kyoto ( itaya-kobo.com ) I particularly like the large eaves space at the entrance. The small planting space in front of the studio is made up of local Enatsu Garden Architect suggested this, A garden with Wabisuke, Megusurinoki and other seasonal trees has been created, I really like how the stones (rocks) create a natural flow. At first I was going to give up on planting trees, but planting trees has made a huge difference in the way the earthen wall looks. Located 10 minutes by car from Asakura Woodworks I went to Amatsutsumi SHOP to buy things like wide double-sided waterproof tape when I ran out, and they were very helpful to me. It is pronounced "Amatsutsumi." ama=Rain , tsutsumi=Embankment... Something to protect us from the rain. i t ' s an ancestral name. Poetic. From my experience of building a house myself, I know that design is important, but I realized that protecting the building from rain and wind is the most important function of a house, especially when it is made of wood. There are many more stories about plastering that I could not write about. • 2025/4/5 (Sat) and 4/6 (Sun) 10:00-16:00 "Uji_river Cherry Blossom Festival held at the same time, Sumiyama Ceramics Festival" Kyoto Prefectural Uji Park (Nakanoshima) area

Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Mokko will not be exhibiting at the Sakura Festival, but as our hometown of Sumiyama is an area where 70% of the people are ceramic artists, we would like to share this information with you as local information. ●Overall information about the Cherry Blossom Festival Overview of the 49th Ujigawa Sakura Festival in 2025 The 46th Sumiyama Pottery Festival will be held at the same time. Location: Around Nakanoshima Island along the Uji River (Uji Park, Kyoto Prefecture) Date: Saturday, April 5th and Sunday, April 6th, 2025 Event hours: 10:00am to 4:00pm *The content may change or be canceled depending on the situation. Nearest station: JR Uji Station, Keihan Uji Station Parking information: List of paid parking lots around the Uji River (Uji City website) Parking lots are crowded. I recommend taking the train. Organized by: Uji City Tourism Association I called the Kyoto Tourism Federation's official website to confirm the date and time of the event in 2025. They said, "It has been decided that the event will be held on April 5th and 6th, 2025. The "tentative" marking is probably the same as in previous years, but it is only tentative because the details have not yet been decided." (Added 3/10/2025) Last year, I went to the Sumiyama Pottery Festival, which was held at the same time as the 2024 Ujigawa Cherry Blossom Festival. ・The food stall zone near Tachibanabashi Bridge, The "Tower Island" in the back is the Sumiyama Pottery Festival Zone, and the other is the "Tower Island" Zone. ・If you walk from Uji Station, it takes about 16 minutes (20 minutes if there are many people) ・If you park in a parking lot near the Pottery Festival venue ・What kinds of pottery are there? Last year's brochure for the 48th Ujigawa Sakura Festival in 2024 If you walk from Uji Station (the map below shows a straight line to Tachibanabashi Bridge, but if you continue along the Ujibashi Shopping Arcade to the "Ujibashi Nishizume" (west end of Ujibashi Bridge), you will come to the large torii gate of "Byodoin Omotesando" (front approach to Byodoin Temple) and then turn there. You can also enjoy the shops along the way, such as a tenugui shop, a pizza shop, and a chai shop.) It takes 12 minutes to reach Tachibanabashi Bridge. As you enter from here, the first thing you'll see is a row of food stalls. Just four minutes away is Tower Island, where the Sumiyama Pottery Festival is held. You can also drive to the car park near the entrance to Tower Island. To get as close as possible to Tower Island (the venue where the Sumiyama Pottery Festival is held) by car, park in the large car park at the back early in the morning and it's only a three-minute walk. ●Last year's real parking information Last year, on Saturday, April 6, 2024, I arrived near the Uji River at around 10:30 in the morning. All the small parking lots were full, including the Byodoin Temple Uji Parking Lot (approximately 28 spaces), which is close to the Pottery Festival venue, Tower Island, and the Tourist Development Uji Parking Lot (75 spaces or more) opposite. In the end, I went to park my car behind Uji Station. It was crowded when I walked from Uji Station, and it took about 20 minutes to get to the pottery festival venue. There was a shop on the way, so it was just the right distance to eat ice cream and talk, and it was fun, but For elderly people with foot pain, etc. who come by car, 1. Go early in the morning when the parking lot is empty ② Enter from the side closest to the Tower Island (Byodoin Temple parking lot side) This will make it a 3-minute walk, so it will be less of a hassle. If you can walk, we recommend exploring Uji by train. ・Byodoin Temple Uji Parking Lot (approximately 28 spaces) ・Uji Tourist Development Uji Parking Lot (Standard passenger cars: 75-200 spaces / Buses: 15-45 spaces) ●Information on participating workshops at the Sumiyama Pottery Festival The Uji River Sakura Festival is an annual event in Uji City where visitors can enjoy the food and pottery stalls while admiring the cherry blossoms in the gentle spring breeze. The Sumiyama Pottery Festival, being held at the same time, will see many pottery kilns (17 kilns) from the Sumiyama area participate and exhibit. (Last year's 2024 exhibitors: Araki Pottery Studio, Ando-san, Inuzuka-san, Okumura Pottery Studio, Ogura-san, Akatsuki Studio's Sasatani-san, Kawashima-san, Gyounkama's Yamamoto-san, Hayashi-san, Takada-san, Ito-san, Kato-san, Hara Kiyokazu Pottery Studio's Hara-san, Okada-san, Funahara-san, Tachibana-san, Kasen Kiln's Nishikawa-san) (Thank you to the Sumiyama potters who kindly allowed us to take photos.) (Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Woodworks is not exhibiting at the Sakura Festival.) There were many items ranging from tableware for daily use to matcha tea bowls. There were also incense burners, water pitchers, and flower vases. Most of the items were priced at 500, 1000, 2000, or 3000 yen, which was too cheap, but there were also items from each kiln that were priced at 10,000 to 100,000 yen, which is not cheap for an outdoor exhibition, but is still cheap in terms of value. Also, the "prototypes" that you can see at such times are proof of the "challenge" in manufacturing, so I personally enjoyed seeing such things. I planned to go for a quick morning visit, but from 11:00, my child and I ate thick tea soft serve ice cream and talked with the people at the sumiyama, and enjoyed more than half a day. There are currently about 40 kilns in Sumiyama, and this is an opportunity to see works from 17 of them at once. (Before COVID-19, the Sumiyama Pottery Festival was held every October.) ● ●Rhinoceros beetle larvae raised by students at Uji Municipal Kasatori Second Elementary School in Sumiyama were also given away for free. There were only a few left. Tachibana Kiyomizu ware used in restaurants The Kyoto Sumiyama Asakura Mokko showroom has a corner that introduces the works of Sumiyama potters. (It is not for sale.) For those who can't make it to the Pottery Festival this year, I hope this will be an opportunity for them to learn about Sumiyama, the home of Kyoto ware and Kiyomizu ware. Japanese broadleaf trees such as chestnuts and zelkova, If you take black and white photos of cherries and walnuts, Chestnut and zelkova have lines, lines, and patterns of wood grain, You can see that it looks a little clearer than Cherry or Walnut. Cherry and walnut can be used to create outlines and silhouettes of furniture, The impression of the design comes into your eyes more straight. When designing, we also consider the individuality of the tree species. ■ Cherry American black cherry. In a few months, it will become more and more dark amber. Cherry is the most fun to enjoy aging. ■ Walnut American black walnut. chocolate color. The color of walnut that is transported to Japan by log and sawed. It's the color of the wood itself. A bright white-yellow with a pink tint, like a baby's skin. "It will turn yellow over time." In addition to the type of wood, the impression changes depending on the difference in paint. ・Unpainted ・Oil coated ・ Oiled after patina finish ・Painted with lacquer ■ Chestnut color It reacts with the tannins in the chestnut tree to create an old-fashioned finish that looks like it has been around for a long time. Rather than coloring, it is dyed by reaction, so it cannot be washed off. Basically, there is no need to worry because the oil is soaked in, but the oil soaked in can be removed by repeatedly wiping with water. If the dye becomes pale, leaving the egg whites or lemon juice on may cause a reaction that causes the dyed color to fade due to its acidity. ■Wiping lacquer The wipe-lacquer finish is a finish that allows you to enjoy the grain of the wood while also obtaining the atmosphere of the color of the lacquer and the water resistance of the lacquer. Lacquer is said to be "the world's strongest paint", but its only weakness is ultraviolet rays. Avoid direct sunlight.
